Lyn Nguyen of Cape Coral, received a Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., at its 164th commencement ceremony on May 11, 2009.

School is out and it is a challenge to keep kids busy and contented during these dog days of summer. It’s not too late to participate in Lee County’s Summer Reading program at the library. It runs through July 1. Stop by the library to get more information. “Be Creative at Your Library” promotes continuous reading during the summer. SRT events, such as puppet shows, animal shows and more are free for children age 6 and older, but tickets are required and can be picked up at the Cape Coral Library. For teens in middle and high school “Read it! Watch it! Win it!” introduces teens to a host of recreational and education opportunities and involves them in crafts, game nights and many more entertaining events.

There are dozens of programs for children, teens and adults at the 11 Lee County Libraries available to all. Pick up the July/August library calendar at the library, or go online at www.leegov.com/library For more information.

Kids read down fines: Children and teens can earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes of reading during the allotted time in the designated area of the library for ages 18 and under at 6:30 p.m. Mondays, July 6 and 20 and on Tuesdays July 7 and 21.

Guitar Hero, jam it up at the World Tour Playoffs from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, in the Marketplaza at Gulf Coast Town Center, off I-75, Alico Road, Exit 128.

Chess on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. July 7, 14, 21, 18. Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Bring a personal chess set, if preferred. Registration is requested.

Edison & Ford Winter Estates

July at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates is highlighted with the return of Henry Ford’s Birthday

Celebration and Estates Inventor’s Summer Camp as well as a variety of other special programs throughout the month of July. The July schedule of programs and events include:

New exhibit opening: “Music, Movies, & Dance with Edison & Ford” July, opening mid-July, films, performances of period music on the Edison piano and other related program activities throughout the year. The exhibit is free with any paid Estates admission and Estates Members are FREE.

The Edison & Ford Winter Estates will be open July 4, from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Estates members are free and there are several reciprocal admission programs.

Estates Inventor’s Summer Camp – Space Still Available

Registration is still open for summer camp at the Estates for a one of a kind experience, discovering, learning, inventing and creating to make learning fun.

All camp sessions will be held in the historic Edison Caretaker’s House (air-conditioned) although some of the activities will be held in the

LCSO Summer Youth Program

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is offering students ages 11 to 13 a chance to interact with law enforcement in an educational environment. The agency’s Summer Youth Program will be held at different Lee County schools in June and July. The sessions run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are offered at no cost. The upcoming dates and locations are:

July 6 to 9: Lehigh Acres Middle School

July 13 to 16: Three Oaks Middle School

Brunch for Backpacks

The Brunch for Backpacks held on June 20,raised enough money from ticket sales and silent auction items to adopt 220 Lee County students in need. These 220 students in need will receive new backpacks and school supplies at the Multicultural Centre of SWFL’s 10th Annual Back-To-School Festival & School Supply Giveaway held at Harborside Event Center on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information visit www.multiculturalcentre.org or call 239-848-0239.

HOPE Scholarships rewarded in honor of former student

Edison State College awarded eight HOPE Scholarships to the son, siblings, and mentee of Guichard “Gucci” Jean-Louis. Gucci, the ESC Student Council President and HOPE Scholar, was killed with his mother in a traffic accident in April.

Dr. Kenneth Walker, president of Edison State College, presented the HOPE Scholarships at a luncheon, Friday, June 26, in the lobby of the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall.

The Project HOPE Scholarship Program awards full tuition and book scholarships to first generation in college students and provides a campus support system to bolster their success.
