Community celebrates HIV/AIDS Client Center

2 min read

Nearly 60 clients, volunteers and community supporters of Island Coast AIDS Network Inc. gathered at the agency’s Fort Myers headquarters on Friday, June 19, for the grand opening celebration of the Tom Mitchell Client Activities Center.

Named after Tom Mitchell, a long-time donor and friend of ICAN who passed away in April, the Client Center provides a comfortable and private place for HIV/AIDS infected and affected individuals to meet with their support groups, socialize, and access computers.

Pastor Steve Filizzi of St. John the Apostle Metropolitan Community Church led guests in prayer stating, “The definition of ‘holy’ is something that is set apart, and this Client Center at ICAN is a holy place for people in need in our community.”

Following remarks from Robert Vice, ICAN board president, and Carolyn Moore, ICAN executive director, the ambassadors of the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Despite the soft economy, several individuals and local businesses generously donated the resources to transform the 730-square-foot former office suite into a much needed multi-purpose client center. Dr. Jose Quero, ICAN board member, and the Southwest Florida Bears social club made sizable financial contributions to begin renovations. Vic’s Painting donated labor and materials to paint all interior walls, and Wayne Wiles Floor Coverings donated carpeting and vinyl tile. Furniture was donated by Robert Vice, CEO of Florida Shores Bank and ICAN board president, Henderson Franklin Attorneys At Law, Lee County Electric Cooperative Inc. and Chico’s F.A.S.

The Office Pub and Jason’s Deli sponsored refreshments for the grand opening reception.

ICAN’s mission is “to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and assist individuals infected and affected in Southwest Florida.” ICAN is partially funded by United Way of Lee County, Lee County Human Services and the Florida Department of Health.
