Cape Coral

Cadet Daniel Wayne Potter

Cadet Daniel Wayne Potter of Cape Coral, graduated on May 8 from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Potter earned a BS in business administration. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fila.

Trafalgar Elementary

Trafalgar Elementary will host its final Positive Behavior Reward (BS) celebration Friday, May 22, beginning at 8:15 a.m., and continuing all day. Students will rotate through a number of centers including bounce houses, fun physical activities, and freeze pops.

These activities are for those students who have earned the privilege through continually meeting school expectations.

Gulf Elementary School

The fourth grade gifted students will be hosting their “Talk and Tour” sessions celebrating their botany unit. The event will take place on May 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The students have been diligently researching the history of botany, Zen garden and pond life.

The young botanists will have their work displayed in the mini museum as they become personal tour guides for the entire student body as well as special guests.

Special guests are invited to join for a special luncheon.

Synchronized swimming

Sunshine Synchro Splash presents, for one day only, an introduction to synchronized swimming on Saturday, June 6, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The cost is $15.

This class will be an indicator of the child’s interest in participating in the Cape Coral Club’s 30th Anniversary Summer Synchro program, which culminates in two shows July 31, and Aug. 1.

Kids fishing derby

The annual Kids All American Fishing Derby to be held Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cape Coral Yacht Club pier. The derby includes: angler education, two hours of fishing, awards and a child’s lunch. Each participant will receive a goodie bag. Children must bring their own fishing rod and tackle. Bait will be provided. Lunch is included with the children’s price of $8. Parents can purchase lunch for $2.50. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Gold Coast Rotary scholarships

The Gold Coast Rotary of Cape Coral announce their 2009 recipients for the Goldcoast Rotary Scholarship Award. They are Alina Ciorni of Cape Coral High School and Signe Thomas of Mariner High School.

There will be an awards luncheon Friday, May 29, at 11:30 a.m. at Gulf Coast Village. Cape Coral’s Mayor Jim Burch will be presenting the scholarship award certificates of the winners.

St. Andrew Catholic School

St. Andrew Catholic School in Cape Coral is adding a 3 year-old pre-kindergarten class to its Early Childhood Department beginning in August. The program is designed for those who wish an all-day program from 8 to 3 p.m or a half day program from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Children must be three years of age by Sept. 1l.

Grant for hunger relief effort

The Cape Coral Community Foundation has granted CCMI, Inc. $5,000 to initiate a food backpack program at Hector A. Cafferate, Jr. Elementary School. This grant is the first of continued efforts being made by the Cape Coral Community Foundation to help the hunger relief effort in the community. Fort Myers

The Formers at FGCU art gallery

The Art Galleries and Alumni Association of Florida Gulf Coast University present a premiere exhibition of works from art students titled,”The Formers: Current Works of FGCU Art Graduates.” An opening reception with the artists will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on May 22 in the main gallery of the Arts complex.

Symphony auditions

The Southwest Florida Symphony will hold chorus auditions for adults and children chorus on Saturday, May 30, at First Baptist Church in downtown Fort Myers. Auditions are 10 minutes long. Bring a prepared vocal selection with two copies of sheet music.

Become a mentor

Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida is an organization that mentors students from kindergarten through high school. But they cannot do their job without help. By volunteering to become a Junior Achievement mentor, have the opportunity to share business experience and knowledge with students eager to learn.

Vicki Tracy, Community Relations Manager at Bentley Village, a classic residence by Hyatt, 598-3153, ext. 140 and Dr. Max Kalm,a resident at Bentley Village, 254-8116 are working with Junior Achievement to enroll new volunteers for this program. Imaginarium

The Imaginarium Hands-On Museum & Aquarium will host its newest traveling exhibit, Heroes in Action! beginning May 15. People of all ages will enjoy the opportunity to explore the world of our emergency services personnel through dioramas, showcased displays and interactives.

This never-before-seen exhibit features 12-inch action figures posed in realistic scenes and includes exciting interactives.

Heroes in Action! debuts at the Imaginarium and is designed as a tribute to honor our Nation’s uniformed emergency personnel including Police, Firefighters, EMTs and Rescue Workers. This vintage collection will promote an understanding of the role of these personnel and take some visitors back to their own childhoods!

The exhibit also coincides with the 45 birthday of GI Joe and it;s upcoming movie in August. Heroes in Action! is sure to excite anyone who has ever collected, played with or appreciated this iconic action figure and the roles of our uniformed emergency personnel. The exhibit runs throughout the summer.
