Cape Coral

Ileana Sanchez

Ileana Sanchez, a senior at Mariner High School, was selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar. It is a distinct honor for Ileana to be recognized as one of the 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars for the Class of 2009, the program’s 10th anniversary class. Ileana was chosen based on her strong leadership, community service and academic achievement that have distinguished her as a leader for America’s future.

Ileana has maintained a 4.1 GPA, has been an active member of the National Honor Society, she organized a teen hospital volunteer program at Cape Coral Hospital, and was a 2008 winner of the Cape Coral Do the Right Thing Award for this project. She will be attending Nova University, majoring in Pre Medical science this fall.

Support a Lee County school at yard sale

There will be a School-wide Yard Sale on Saturday, May 16, at Patriot Elementary School in Cape Coral. It is sponsored by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization, for them to help play more of a role in the school’s finances as budget concerns continue to be an issue.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. until noon. Patriot Elementary is located at 711 SW 18th St., just off Skyline. Get great bargains and support Lee County schools.

Symphony Youth Orchestra performs season finale

The Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform their season finale Colors in Sound on Sunday May 17 at 7 p.m. at Fort Myers High Auditorium.

The Symphony Youth Orchestra is an auditioned group of 90 talented young musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. The young musicians develop their musical skills and talents by rehearsing weekly, training with professional orchestra members and presenting public performances throughout the year. Auditions for the 2009-2010 season Youth Orchestra will be held beginning Aug. 30. Tickets for the Youth Orchestra Colors in Sound concert are $7 and are available at the door or by contacting the Box Office 418-1500.

PAL flag football registration

The Fort Myers Police Department’s Police Athletic League is registering children for flag football. Boys and girls ages 8 through17 are eligible to play through May 18, at the Billy Bowlegs/PAL Park located at 851 Marsh Avenue. Kids can expect camaraderie, team play and conditioning skills. The registration fee is $5 and a birth certificate is required. PAL offers a host of recreational activities year-round for boys and girls ages 8 to 17. The events give young people fun activities and positive role models. For more information contact PAL Director Walt Wesley at 693-1146.

Imaginarium

The Imaginarium Hands-On Museum & Aquarium will host its newest traveling exhibit, Heroes in Action! beginning May 15. People of all ages will enjoy the opportunity to explore the world of our emergency services personnel through dioramas, showcased displays and interactives.

This never-before-seen exhibit features 12-inch action figures posed in realistic scenes and includes exciting interactives.

Heroes in Action! debuts at the Imaginarium and is designed as a tribute to honor our Nation’s uniformed emergency personnel including Police, Firefighters, EMTs and Rescue Workers. This vintage collection will promote an understanding of the role of these personnel and take some visitors back to their own childhoods.

The exhibit also coincides with the 45th birthday of GI JOE and the upcoming movie in August. Heroes in Action! is sure to excite anyone who has ever collected, played with or appreciated this iconic action figure and the roles of our uniformed emergency personnel.

The exhibit begins May 15, and runs throughout the summer.

Swimming classes

Classes start in May at the Pine Island Pool with the Sunshine Synchro Splash Sychronized Swimming Club, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.on Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $50 per month for two days per week or $35 per month for one day per week.

Tutors needed for elementary schools

Senior volunteers, 60 years or older, are needed for tutoring in elementary schools in Cape Coral and Bonita Springs area. A stipend and mileage reimbursement are provided for those who qualify.
