Cape Coral

Tutors needed for elementary schools

Senior volunteers, 60 years or older, are needed for tutoring in elementary schools in Cape Coral and the Bonita Springs area. A stipend and mileage reimbursement are provided for those who qualify. Educational seminar

Edward Jones financial advisor Terry L. Frith of Cape Coral is hosting a free educational seminar, titled “A Woman’s Guide to Money Matters,” from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Houlihan’s Restaurant, 627 Cape Coral Parkway W. During the seminar, participants will learn:

– What one can do now to prepare for retirement.

– One’s options to pay for a child’s or grandchild’s education.

– Developing a strategy to help achieve one’s financial goals.

Boating class

A basic skills and seamanship boating class sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla will be held from 7-9 p.m, Mondays and Thursdays, Monday-June 11, at the Publix at Santa Barbara Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway. Cost is $25. For information, call Dave McDonough at 283-2208.

School yard sale

There will be a schoolwide yard sale from 8 a.m.-noon May 16 at Patriot Elementary School, 711 S.W. 18th St. It is sponsored by the school’s Parent Teacher Organization for them to help play more of a role in the school’s finances as budget concerns continue to be an issue. Get great bargains and support Lee County schools.

Local honors

Eric Darden, a resident of Cape Coral, recently completed the academic requirements, flight training and Federal Aviation Administration checkride to become a licensed private pilot.

The ground school course is offered through the Lee County Adult/Community Education Program. The school and training was conducted by Ed Fink, master certificated flight instructor. For information about the program, contact Fink at 489-0443.

Bowl-a-thon

Business & Industry Services introduces “Making Age an Asset in Your Job Search.” Business & Industry Services has a program that makes it easy to take high-quality, non-credit online courses. It has partnered with ed2go to offer hundreds of online, instructor-facilitated courses and are pleased to announce the launch of “Making Age an Asset in Your Job Search.” Based on research and programs developed by AARP, the course is a guide for people over 50 who want to make a career change, find employment opportunities or learn the strategies that will give them the best chance of getting hired. “Making Age an Asset in Your Job Search” is part of BIS’s growing catalog of more than 300 instructor-facilitated online courses. New sessions of each course run every month. They last six weeks, with two new lessons being released weekly. The courses are entirely Web-based with comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments. Rapid Recovery

Edison State College has announced an education initiative, Rapid Recovery, designed to help people adversely affected by the economy quickly retrain for in-demand jobs. Courses will be available on the Lee, Collier and Charlotte campuses and at the Hendry/Glades center and online. Classes begin today and will continue on an ongoing basis. ‘Colors in Sound’

The Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform its season finale, “Colors in Sound,” at 7 p.m. May 17 at Fort Myers High auditorium. Tickets are $7 and are available at the door or by contacting the box office at 418-1500.

The orchestra is an auditioned group of 90 talented young musicians between the ages of 8-18. The young musicians develop their musical skills and talents by rehearsing weekly, training with professional orchestra members and presenting public performances throughout the year.

PAL flag football

The Fort Myers Police Department’s Police Athletic League is registering children for flag football. Boys and girls ages 8-14 are eligible to play today-May 18 at the Billy Bowlegs/PAL Park, located at 851 Marsh Avenue. Kids can expect camaraderie, team play and conditioning skills. Registration fee is $5 and a birth certificate is required. PAL offers a host of recreational activities year-round for boys and girls ages 8-17. CEO Academy

Junior Achievement of Southwest Florida is accepting applications for the its CEO Academy, an exclusive one-week summer camp for high school students eager to learn what it takes to be a successful business leader. Presented by Florida Gulf Coast University’s Lutgert College of Business, the academy will take place from June 15-19. Students may apply by contacting their school guidance counselor or the Junior Achievement office at 225-2590. There is a $100 application fee, which is fully refundable if the student is not selected. Participants will receive a certificate, credentials for college applications and potential internship opportunities. Camp hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Friday, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
