Blood pressure and blood sugar clinics

Tatalomo’s Nurses Registry will provide complimentary blood pressure and blood sugar clinics on the third Monday of each month, at Lake Kennedy Senior Center, 400 Santa Barbara Blvd. The cost is free. For more information call 574-0575.

Retired Registered Nurses

Southwest Florida Society of Retired Registered Nurses will meet on May 12 at 12:30 p.m. at Perkins on Cape Coral Parkway. The program includes a social event and officer elections. Lunch will be ordered from the menu on an individual basis.

Blood Drive

The Cape Coral Association of Realtors will host a blood drive on May 13 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Just one pint of blood can help save the lives of several people and all blood donations remain in the Lee Memorial Health System.

In addition to donating blood to help save lives every time you donate blood, you receive vital health checks free of charge, including pulse rate, blood pressure body temperature blood type and anemia. Also,upon requests,a cholesterol level check can also be done.

Free Skin Cancer Screenings

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer with over one million diagnosed each year. May starts National Skin Cancer/Melanoma Awareness month and Riverchase Dermatology will be holding free skin cancer screenings at its Fort Myers, Naples and Cape Coral locations.

Coalition for Drug-Free SW Florida

The Lee County Coalition for a Drug-Free Southwest Florida is encouraging the smokers of Lee County to think of the health of their pets every time they light up.

Recent studies indicate that there is no safe level of secondhand smoke for humans or for pets. Pets living in homes with smokers show an increased level of respiratory problems, allergies, nasal and lung cancer in dogs and lymphoma in cats.

Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, Medical Director of the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center says, “Environmental tobacco smoke has been shown to contain numerous cancer-causing compounds, making it hazardous for animals as well as humans. owners should not expose their pets to secondhand smoke”.

Free workshop for chronic back pain sufferers

A free workshop for chronic back pain sufferers will be offered on May 5 at 7 p.m., at the Hilton Garden Inn, Fort Myers. Dr. James Zuk and the

Spinal Aid Centers of America are introducing a medical treatment that rids back pain without drugs or surgery and it is painless. It is fully approved by the FDA and research from the American Journal of Pain Management reported an 86 percent success rate with cases of herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, stenosis, degeneration and facet arthrosis.

There is no fee to attend, but you must call 540-7100 to register and reserve a seat.

CHADD meeting

CHADD of Lee County is local chapter of the national organization. We provide information and support for adults, parents with AD/HD children,and educators and other interested professionals.. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday (with the exception of November) of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. at Lee Memorial Hospital Auditorium, 2776 Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers.

The next meeting is May 5 and includes a conversation with a mental health professional about living with AD/HD; recognition and treatment; coaching; onseling creating positive interactions in the family.

NAMI

Support groups and classes are provided by NAMI Lee County free of charge.

NAMI Connection is a support group for adults who have been diagnosed with any mental illness. Meetings:

Monday nights at Lee memorial hospital in room 2, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Tuesday night at Lee Mental Health, Ruth Cooper Campus, 2780 ortiz Ave., Building F, Fort Myers, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday nights from April 29-June 1l, 6 p.m. at JBH Community Health,12550 New Brittany Road, Fort Myers. Class requires an application by Aoril 22. Call 239-337-9024.

Thursday afternoon United Way House, 1105 Cultural Parkway, Cape Coral, in Family Course:

Family in Family Courses: for loved ones of those diagnosed with a mental illness. Taught three to four times per year and is taught in various areas of Lee County.
