Cape Coral

Life Line Screening

The Christ Lutheran Church at 2911 Del Prado Blvd., will host Life Line Screening on April 29 at 9 a.m.

Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm abdominal aortic aneuryems, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women.

Blood pressure and blood sugar clinics

Tatalomo’s Nurses Registry will provide complimentary blood pressure and blood sugar clinics on the third Monday of each month, at Lake Kennedy Senior Center, 400 Santa Barbara Blvd. The cost is free. For more information call 574-0575.

C.A.R.E.S.

C.A.R.E.S., Community Awareness in Recognizing & Educating on Suicide, invite everyone to their largest awareness event of the year: “30 Days of Hope.”

As a kickoff, CARES will be having a candlelight remembrance of those loved ones lost to suicide. Coffee and dessert will be served.

This is a free event and all are welcomed. It will be held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club Pavilion from 7pm to 9pm. Bring a photo of your loved one to share with all.

Conference on Aging

Hope Hospice and Community Services will host the Eighth Annual Southwest Florida Conference on Aging, to be held in Fort Myers on Friday, April 17. The Conference is sponsored by Osterhout, McKinney, & Prather, PA., Elder Law Attorneys.

The conference will provide information on a wide range of issues related to aging, including the impact of current economic conditions. Other topics include care options, protection from abuse and driving competence.

The conference will be held at the Broadway Palm, 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

Marketplace Ministries of Life Church is providing free health screenings for all ages at its Health 4 Life event April 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the church campus located at 11735 Plantation Road in Fort Myers. The community outreach program will include screenings for blood pressure, height, weight, glucose and cholesterol.

This is a free event, but pre-registration is required. Those wishing to participate should call 325-5433 (LIFE) ext. 108.

Autism conference

A conference on autism, “Promising Pathways: The Road to Best Practice in Autism,” will be presented for physicians, parents and educators on Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom at Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, Florida. The Road to Best Practice in Autism conference is free and open to the public. Reservations are required by registering at: www.fgcu.edu/events/promisingpathways by April 17 or by calling 992-4680.

Rabins coming to Temple Beth-El

Peter Rabins, MD, MPH, an internationally-known expert on psychiatric disorders in the elderly and co-author of the book “The 36-Hour Day,” and author of “Getting Old Without Getting Anxious” will deliver a talk on advances in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Rabins, Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, serves on the Professional Advisory Board of event sponsor SeniorBridge. The lecture and book signing is free to the public. It will take place on April 23 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Temple Beth-El, located at 16225 Winkler Road, Ft. Myers. NAMI

Support groups and classes are provided by NAMI Lee County free of charge.

NAMI Connection is a support group for adults who have been diagnosed with any mental illness. Meetings are Monday nights at Lee memorial hospital in room 2, from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday nights at Lee Mental Health, Ruth Cooper Campus, 2780 ortiz Ave., Building F, Fort Myers, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday nights from April 29 through June 1l at 6 p.m. at JBH Community Health,12550 New Brittany Road, Fort Myers. Class requires an application by April 22 by calling 337-9024, Thursday afternoon United Way House, 1105 Cultural Parkway, Cape Coral, in Family Course.

Family in Family Courses: for loved ones of those diagnosed with a mental illness. Taught three to four times per year and is taught in various areas of Lee County.

Peer to Peer

Peer to Peer Course: for persons with a diagnosis of any mental illness. Taught three-four times per year in various locations in Lee County.

Putting the Pieces Together, a support group for loved ones of adolescents, who have been diagnosed with a mental illness, 6 to 8 p.m., Riverside Church 8660 Daniels Parkway, Main Building.

Rainbow Trails

Rainbow Trails, the Hope Hospice bereavement camp for children, needs male counselors to work with boys between the ages of 6 and 16.

The camp will be held in Ellenton from June 5 through 7. Bus transportation from Fort Myers is provided for the entire group.

Each counselor will be responsible for three boys. Duties may include supervision during recreation activities, entertainment and meals, and making sure the boys are accounted for each night.

Rainbow Trails is a highly rewarding experience for everyone involved.

All applicants will undergo a police background check.

Applicants must attend three training sessions, on April 27, May 4 and May 11, from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as the entire weekend of camp.
