Educational series for family caregivers of older adults

The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center will hold an educational series for caregivers during the month of April. Caring Across Generations will feature workshops on issues such as Being an Informed Caregiver, Making Sense of Legal Matters, Making the Most of Your Money, and Considering Medical Care Throughout the Illness.

The workshops will be offered on Thursday evenings during the month of April. Each workshop will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and is designed to meet the needs of spouses, families, or other primary caregivers.

On April 9, Peg Gray-Vickrey, DNS, RNC of Florida Gulf Coast University will speak about Alzheimer’s disease and Karen Washburn, MSW of Lee Memorial Health System will speak about keeping your social network strong throughout the caregiving journey.

On April 16, Lance McKinney, Elder Law Attorney, will speak about basic legal planning and how and when to prepare important legal documents.

On April 23, Reina Schlager of Schlager, Sonntag & Levin will speak about issues pertaining to financial resources and how to find funds you may not know are available.

During the final session on April 30, Elise Eifert of the Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center will speak about managing challenging behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease and memory impairment. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on managing behavioral symptoms with local experts representing day care, home health, assisted living, and skilled nursing homes. Panelists include Cindi Ryerson of Millennium House, Sara Kachor of Home Instead, Karla LaFreniere of Arden Courts Alzheimer’s Assisted Living, and Susan King of Winkler Court.

This workshop series is offered at no charge by the Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center. Refreshments will be provided by Magnolia Court at HealthPark. Each session will be held in the community room at Magnoilia Court at HealthPark, 9461 HealthPark Circle, Ft. Myers 33908. Participants must register in advance to participate by calling 437-3007.
