Cape Coral

Kiwanis kids’ free fishing derby

The Cape Coral Kiwanis Club is conducting its 20th annual Free Kids’ Fishing Derby Saturday at the Cape Coral Yacht Club fishing pier. The derby starts at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 11:30 a.m.

All boys and girls from ages 5 through 15 are invited. No advance registration is necessary. Just come to the pier and check in before 8:30 a.m. Rods, reels and bait will be provided by the Kiwanis Club.

The derby is limited to 375 kids.

Spring book sale

The Friends of the Cape Coral Library will hold its Spring Book Sale on April 24 and 25. Doors open to the public at 9 a.m. both days. The sale runs until 5 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday. There will be a members preview on Thursday, April 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 at the door. The sale will be held at the library located at 921 S.W. 39th Terrace.

Ida Baker High School

Ida S. Baker High School presents “Into the Woods,” April 24, at 7 p.m. and April 25, at 2 p.m. at Ida Baker High School, 3500 Agualinda Blvd. Tickets are $3 for children and senior citizens, $5 for students and $7 for adults. Children’s Day/Book Day is officially observed on April 30, but the Lee County Library System has scheduled a week of activities leading up to the day of the observance. Celebrate literacy for children of all cultures in recognition of El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros! Parents and grandparents are encouraged to participate in activities on this internationally celebrated day honoring children, books and bilingual literacy.

Participe en la celebracion internacional de afabetizacion juvenil con El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros! Toda la familia esta invitada a participar en actividades en este dia en el que se celebran internacionalmenta la ninez, los libros y la alfabetizacion bilingue.

Tutors needed

Learn to teach English to an adult who speaks another language by signing up for a tutor training session with Literacy Volunteers of Lee County, a nonprofit agency that provides free adult literacy programs with the help of trained volunteers.

A training session for volunteer tutors is scheduled in Cape Coral, Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Epiphany Episcopal Church, 2507 Del Prado Blvd. Call 242-4374 to request a registration packet. A $30 training fee is requested to cover the cost of the materials. Scholarships are available.

Tutors needed for elementary schools

Senior volunteers, 60 years or older, are needed for tutoring in elementary schools in Cape Coral and Bonita Springs area. A stipend and mileage reimbursement is provided for those who qualify. Help make a difference in the community. Call Joan, Foster Grandparent Program at the Dr. Piper Center at 332-5346 for more information.

Pine Island

Free day trip to Seminole Casino

AVID program

South Fort Myers High School is inviting parents and students to a formal introduction of the AVID program, which will be implemented at South Fort Myers during the 2009/10 school year. The presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the school’s auditorium.

Evangelical Christian School

Evangelical Christian School’s Early Education Center is expanding its preschool program to include a part-time preschool program. AEEC is now accepting applications for the part-time program but limited space is available. Children entering the three-year-old program will have the ability to enjoy a five day a week, 7 a.m. until noon. For more information contact Mrs. Howe at 936-1933 or email THowe@goecs.org.

Law Camp

The Fort Myers Police Department is now accepting applications for the 20 Anniversary of the Annual Respect for Law Camp, which is scheduled for June 19 through June 21, at Dunbar Middle School, 4750 Winkler Avenue Extension.

The three-day, two-night Respect for Law Camp is open to children ages 11 through 14. Enrollment in the camp is limited to the first 120 campers to apply. The cost is $50 and includes all instruction, food, and lodging. To register, an application must be completed with a check or money order attached (made out to “Respect for Law Camp”). Children from throughout Southwest Florida are welcome to apply.

Additional information also is available at that same telephone number. FMPD, City of Fort Myers Fire Services, Lee County Emergency Medical Services and the Optimist Club of Lee County sponsor the camp.

Girls Going Places

Girls Going Places is gearing up for its May 6 event. The program identifies the most enterprising, community-minded teen girls in Southwest Florida who will compete to win national scholarships and prizes. School counselors and principals must have their nominee forms submitted to Lynne Tarman at Alliance Financial Group, 14021 Metropolis Avenue in Fort Myers by April 15 to be included.

School principals and counselors not familiar with the program should contact Lynne Tarman at 561-2900. Students who would like to get more information should contact their school principals and counselors for more information.

LAEA Student Exhibit at the Alliance

Young artists across Lee County have been painting, sculpting, drawing and welding, stretching their limits of creativity to prepare for the annual LAEA exhibit hosted by the Lee County Alliance for the Arts. Students from elementary to high school will be displaying work through May 2nd in the Alliance galleries.

Entries for the high school division of the LAEA exhibit are juried by art teachers at each school. Once they are on display, judges select the winners in several categories with the first place winners qualifying for best in show and the top artist receiving scholarship opportunities. All high schools in Lee County are eligible for this show.

Do not miss out on the chance to support Lee County’s talented young artists. The Alliance will host an opening reception for high school reception on April 21 from 5 to 7 p.m.
