Local students collect Jell-O for caring center
Generosity abounds, even in very tough economic times.
This was proven this month as the students at Christ Lutheran School donated more than 500 boxes of Jell-O to the Cape Coral Caring Center.
The project was part of the school’s celebration of the 2009 Lutheran Schools Week.
“We contacted the Cape Coral Caring Center and asked what they needed to fill the bags they give to area residents who need assistance with food,” said Principal Iris Mitchell. “We were told that one thing they never seem to have is dessert items like Jell-O and puddings.
“I wanted to challenge the students to make donations, and I thought I set the goal quite high,” she continued. “The Christ Lutheran School families once again amazed me with their extreme generosity, even when many are struggling economically themselves.”
Mitchell offered a challenge to the students. She promised if they were able to collect more than 500 boxes of Jell-O and puddings, she would host an outdoor, schoolwide picnic March 13.
Always up for a challenge, the students won their right to the picnic.
Throughout the school year the students at Christ Lutheran have learned the valuable lesson that it is better to give than to receive. Last fall they collected hundreds of jars of peanut butter and jelly for the Cape Coral Caring Center.
During December the students collected “gently used” blankets for the Salvation Army. They also took a truck full of new toys to a local fire department to be distributed to local children for Christmas.
Christ Lutheran School is located on Del Prado Boulevard. It has students in VPK through fifth grade.
