Gulf Elementary School

Gulf Elementary will host their “Fine Arts Night” on March 24 and 26 in the Primary Learning Center at Gulf Elementary School on Agualinda Boulevard across from Ida Baker High School at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. admire artwork created by students in grades K through five and the kindergarten students will serenade with a musical treat. Carol McLaughlin

Carol McLaughlin has joined the staff of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Inc. as the Special Projects Coordinator. McLaughlin brings 17 years of experience in education to The Foundation. She taught Math and Science to students with learning disabilities and then later took a role in administration. McLaughlin left the schools in 1992 to serve as the Administrative Director with the Alliance of the Arts. Most recently, McLaughlin retired as the Chief Program Officer at the Southwest Florida Community Foundation.

FGCU

VPK Enrollment Day

The Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida in conjunction with Community Coordinated Care for Children (4C), invites all local families with 4-year-old children to attend the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten Enrollment Day on March 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is free for all eligible children, regardless of family income.

Symphony Youth Orchestra

March 14 at 7 p.m. at South Fort Myers High School Auditorium, 14020 Plantation Road, honoring the 2nd place Concerto competition winner Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, conducted by Michael Hall.

Tickets are $7 and are available at the Symphony Box Office at 418-1500 or at the door the evening of the concert.

High Tech Central

Fitness event for girls

Girl Scouts at Pump It Up Girls in kindergarten through fifth grade, Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts, are invited to have some heart-pumping fun. Activities include bounce houses, slides, obstacle courses, and more. Girls must be accompanied by an adult for the entire event and also bring socks to wear during the activities.

The event will be held Thursday, March 23,5:30 to 7:30 p.m, at Pump It Up!

Cost is $5 per girl. Adults are free. Girls must pre-register by March 20.

Pizza and a soft drink can also be purchased for $3 per person; however, tickets for food must be reserved in advance.

Girls Going Places

Girls Going Places is gearing up for its big May 6 event. The program identifies the most enterprising, community-minded teen girls in Southwest Florida who will compete to win national scholarships and prizes. School counselors and principals must have their nominee forms submitted to Lynne Tarman at Alliance Financial Group, 14021 Metropolis Avenue in Fort Myers by April 15, 2009 to be included.

School principals and counselors not familiar with the program should contact Lynne Tarman at 561-2900. Students who would like to get more information should contact their school principals and counselors for more information.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the 10th Annual Reading Festival to be held March 21 at Centennial Park. Opportunities are available for set up the day before and assistance during the day long event itself as well as clean up after the event is over.

Wine & Food Fest benefit

Local children in Southwest Florida will benefit from more than $750,000 (net, after expenses) raised during the 2009 Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest, which concluded Saturday. More than $550,000 of that total came from the event’s auction, held as part of a Grand Tasting and Auction at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club.

North High Band Boosters to host Craft Fair/Flea Market

The North Fort Myers High School Band Boosters are hosting a Craft Fair/Flea Market, Saturday, March 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Coral Gate Commons Shopping Center-Corner of Pondella Road and Orange Grove Boulevard.
