Cape Coral

Student honors

Among the students from the University of Kentucky’s dean’s list from Cape Coral are Kristen Kirdahy, a third year pharmacy student studying pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy and Corey Taylor Smith, a sophomore, studying international studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Computer classes

The Cape Coral Small Business Development Center, 1020 Cultural Park Blvd., Unit 3, presents:

CAP review course

A Certified Administrative Professional review course will meet from 5-8 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 19-April 23, at Cape Coral City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. Classes designed for office professionals who already hold a Certified Professional Secretary certification and need part IV. Video contest

The Lee County Coalition for a Drug-Free Southwest Florida has announced that Tobacco Free Florida is hosting a video contest. Those entering the contest need to be 11 years of age or older. The contest will give participants the opportunity to tell why they want to be free from tobacco in 2009. Grab a video camera or Web cam and, in 60 seconds or less, finish the following sentence: “I want to be free of tobacco in 2009 because … ” One grand prize winner and five first prize winners will be chosen and will receive handheld HD video cameras and/or MP3 players. Ida S. Baker choir and wind ensemble

An evening of dinner and music will be presented by the Ida S. Baker High School choir and wind ensemble Feb. 26. Dinner catered by Olive Garden will be served starting at 5:15 p.m., followed by a live concert at 7 p.m. There also will be a silent auction featuring music and sports memorabilia. Tickets are $10 and proceeds support the music program. Ida S. Life Skills Center

The Lee County Life Skills Center, 3637 Martin Luther King Blvd., Fort. Myers, will have open enrollment for high school students wanting to receive their diploma. The school is set up in four hour sessions. Credits can be earned quickly. The cost is free. For information, call 332-3484.

Food drive

Lee County’s 13 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will hold a monthlong food drive to benefit Community Cooperative Ministries, Inc. through March 18. A kickoff event to promote the donation effort and to generate community interest is planned at South Fort Myers High School, 14020 Plantation Road, Fort Myers. Only non-perishable food items will be collected and stored at various school locations until they are delivered to CCMI’s soup kitchen and food pantry. For information, call 337-8204.

Edison Park Elementary

Open auditions

Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is holding open auditions for adults and children for “Peter Pan” and “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on Feb. 28 at 1380 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Ages 8 to 14 will audition from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Ages 15 and up will audition from 1-3 p.m. Auditions are on a first-come, first-serve basis. A sign-up sheet will be available at 10:30 a.m. No appointments will be taken. Anyone interested in auditioning should bring a current headshot and resume, be prepared to sing 16 bars. Bring sheet music in the proper key. An accompanist will be provided; no audio tapes. Actors and actresses may be asked to attend a dance and/or reading audition after the singing audition. SAT prep class

The Jewish Federation of Lee & Charlotte Counties is offering a special prep class series to help get students ready for upcoming 2009 SAT tests. Class fee is $355 and includes all course materials. A minimum of six students is necessary for the class to be held, and a maximum of 12 students will be accepted. The 14-session classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays starting March 16 for the June 6 SAT test. Classes will continue March 18 and 30; April 1, 20, 22, 27 and 29; and May 4, 6, 13, 18, 20 and 27. Math classes are held Mondays, and classes for the verbal section are held Wednesdays. Sessions, which run from 6:30-9 p.m., are held at 6237 Presidential Court, Suite E, Fort Myers. Classes are open to all students on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration for the upcoming fall term at Evangelical Christian School is now in full swing. Financial aid is available for the 2009 to 2010 school year.
