Memorial service to mark Iwo-Jima 64th anniversary
The Pfc. Paul E. Ison Detachment Marine Corps league will hold a memorial service at 11 a.m. Sunday at Eco Park for the 64th anniversary of the landing on Iwo-Jima.
The landing took place Feb. 19, 1945, by the 5th Amphibious Corps, comprised of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions. It was supported by all types of ships and aircraft of U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Air Units and specialized units of the U.S. Army. The battle continued until March 25, 1945.
Marines suffered 25,851 casualties. Of the 21,000-plus defenders, very few survived. Of the six men who raised the flag, only three survived the war – all have since died.
