Colours School hosts ‘Yes We Can’ show

2 min read

Colours School of the Arts of Southwest Florida, in cooperation with New Beginnings Ministries, will present its annual MAAFA production at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 and at 5 p.m. Feb. 22 at East Lee County High School.

The production commemorates the history and hope of the African American experience. MAAFA is a Swahili word meaning “African Holocaust.” The theme for the show is “Yes We Can,” which honors the battle cry of newly elected President Barack Obama.

The production includes a cast of up to 70 performers of oratory, modern and interpretive dance and liturgical dance, as well as a gospel ensemble. Performances by Young Artists of the Year Chris Caldwell and Bianca Russell will be one of the many highlights of the show.

The cast of all ages have been preparing for months to reenact important moments in African American history, including the journey through the middle passage that so many endured.

Colours is currently seeking sponsors for the show. Anyone interested in purchasing advance tickets or learning more about sponsorships should contact Sharon Hill, executive director, at 839-1773.

Tickets for adults are $20 and tickets for children ages 3 to 12 are $10. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets at $15 per person.

All proceeds from ticket sales benefit the non-profit school and help underprivileged students to learn alternate forms of expression.
