Cape Coral
Private pilot ground school
A private pilot ground school will be offered Jan. 14-April 29 from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays at Cape Coral High School. The cost of the course is $113 plus a text.
The instructor will guide the student through airplanes, aerodynamics, airplane instruments, engines, systems airports, air traffic control, airspace and more.
Registration will be held at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday. For information, call the instructor Ed Fink at 489-0443.
Mike Razavi of Cape Coral is among the area residents who recently completed the school. Completion of the school is one step in the process of obtaining a private pilot license.
Daddy/Daughter Date Night
The 17th Annual Daddy/Daughter Date Night will be held from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. An evening of music, prizes, catered hot and cold appetizers, and refreshments. Cost is $48 per couple. To register and for information, call 574-0804.
Child ID program
The Child Identification Program addresses the alarming fact that nearly 800,000 children are reported missing in the United States each year. The program provides parents and guardians the means to quickly get vital information to emergency responders.
The Cape Coral Masonic Lodge will create a limited number of child identification videos. The Drivers License Bureau will issue child ID cards, and the Cape Coral Police Department and Lee County Sheriff’s Office will perform fingerprinting.
There will be games, hot dogs, drinks, candy and more for the children.
The event will take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan 31 at 24 Santa Barbara Blvd. For information, call 574-2122.

Friends of the Cape Coral Library
Start the New Year by making new friends and learning about the Friends of the Cape Coral Library. Learn how the group helps, how to help the library or enjoy the program and events the group sponsors.
The next meeting is set for at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 17 with a continental breakfast and social hour. Detective novelist Art Adkins will talk about and sign copies of his new book, “The Oasis Project.”

Tender Loving Care Children’s Home
The Tender Loving Care Children’s Home had its annual holiday party last month at Carrabba’s with 192 adults and children.
Santa arrived on a Harley with gifts for the children. John Ottervamnger of Professional Pool Cleaning was Santa.
Carrabba’s donated its restaurant and lunch for everyone. The Bridge Networking Group hosted and donated a Wii. Zackary Cozad, 17, of Cape Coral, won the Wii.

Butterfly Estates
The Butterfly Estates, 1815 Fowler St., Fort Myers, announces that it will open at 9 a.m. Saturday.

How to get published

Acting classes
Classes for Holiday’s School of High Drama and Over Acting begin Jan. 15 at the Lee County Alliance for the Arts. Classes include:
– Acting for life: Through improvisation games and play readings, the eight-week class will take participants on a journey to learn more about themselves and how we all interact. Class will culminate in a short performance for family and friends. Cost is $110.
– Pint size performers: The six-week class uses improvisation games to help youngsters learn about themselves and how they interact with the world. There will be a short performance for family and friends during the last class. Cost is $90.
– My first movie: Shawn Holiday will teach a group of first-time filmmakers the basics of making a short film. Class is four Thursdays from 4:30-6 p.m. beginning Jan. 15. Cost is $48.

Tutors needed to teach English
More than 40 adults in Cape Coral and Fort Myers want to learn English and are waiting for a tutor, according to Literacy Volunteers of Lee County.
Literacy Volunteers of Lee County is a nonprofit agency with a mission of providing free and confidential adult literacy programs with the help of trained volunteers.
Volunteer tutors are required to attend a one-day training session sponsored by Literacy Volunteers of Lee County.
Tutors must be over the age of 18 and willing to commit a minimum of one hour of tutoring time per week for a minimum of a year. They must be high school graduates, literate in English and do not need to speak another language.
Upcoming tutor training sessions are scheduled for January and February. Trainings are eight hours and include:
– Jan. 17: Edison College in Fort Myers at 9 a.m.
– Feb. 21: Epiphany Episcopal Church in Cape Coral at 9 a.m.
The training is free; $30 is requested to cover the cost of the materials. Scholarships are available.
Volunteers will be trained to teach an adult who speaks another language how to read, write, speak and understand English. Trained tutors will be matched with a student or students who want to learn English.
Adults who are interested in taking the training are invited to contact Literacy Volunteers of Lee County at 242-4374 for a packet of information and a registration form.
Literacy Volunteers of Lee County is a United Way partner agency and an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, the national adult literacy association. It provides case management for all. For information, call Tess Murphy at 242-4374.
Registration at Hodges University
Registration for the winter term at Hodges University has begun for currently enrolled, continuing students and for new students. The winter term begins Jan. 20.
Hodges University will begin to offer classes on the Highland’s campus of South Florida Community College as of January. Students will be able to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies program through an arrangement with Hodges.
