Cape Coral
Betty Gilbert book signing author
Betty Gilbert, a Cape Coral writer, who wrote a children’s book “Buffy The Burrowing Owl” will be available for book signings on Saturday, Jan. 3, in front of the Red Barn at The Downtown Street Market at 4711 Vincennes Blvd., from 8 a.m-1 p.m. Other Book Signing Events: She will be at Oasis Middle School on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m.; during the Cape Coral Festival of the Arts, she will be in front of June’s Hallmark Shoppe at 1339 Cape Coral Parkway, Saturday, Jan. 10 and Sunday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m.

Youth Flag Football
Cape Coral Parks & Recreation offers Youth Flag Football (boys and girls ages 8-13) as of May 1, 2009. Registration Jan. 5 through Jan. 30, and may be done on-line at www.capecoral.net click on the Athletics home page. Additional information will be received via e-mail, or sign up at the Athletic office, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd., 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Games are played Wednesday evening and/or Saturdays at the Storm Football Complex, 2602 Chiquita Blvd.

Private Pilot Ground School
A Private Pilot Ground School will be offered at Cape Coral High School on Wednesdays, from 6-9 p.m. The course starts Wednesday, Jan. 14, and ends on April 29. The cost of the course if $113 plus a text, The instructor will guide the student through airplanes and aerodynamics; airplane instruments, engines and systems airports, air traffic control and airspace and more.

Mike Razavi of Cape Coral is among the area residents who recently completed the private pilot ground school. Completion of the ground school is one step in the process of obtaining a private pilot license.
Daddy/Daughter Date Night
The 17th Annual Daddy/Daughter Date Night Friday, Jan. 16, 6-9 p.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. An evening of music, prizes, catered hot and cold appetizers, and refreshments.

Masonic children’s identification program
The Child Identification Program (CHIP) addresses the alarming fact that nearly 800,000 children are reported missing in the United States each year. CHIP provides parents and guardians the means to quickly get vital information to emergency responders.
Cape Coral Masonic Lodge will create a limited number of child identification videos. The drivers license bureau will issue child ID cards and the CapeCoral police and lee county Sheriff’s Dept. will perform finger-printing for the children. For the children there will be games, free hot dogs and a drink, free candy and more.

Friends of the Cape Coral Library
Start the New Year by making new friends and finding out how this group helps, and how to help the library, or enjoy the many program and events they sponsor. Their next meeting is Saturday morning, Jan. 17, at 9:30 a.m., with a continental breakfast and social hour. This month detective novelist, Art Adkins, will talk about and sign copies of his new book “The Oasis Project.”

FGCU
FGCU Art Gallery invites the public and media to an opening reception for “Man Made” exhibition featuring the environmental art of Mary Ellen Croteau, 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Art Gallery. The exhibition runs through Feb. 7, and is free and open to the public.

A Class Act at Florida Rep
Florida Repertory Theatre’s Education Department is now enrolling for its winter class session for youth and adults, and has opportunities for children ages 4 and up, as well as adults.
The six week winter class session runs Monday evenings in Florida Rep’s studio space in the Fort Myers River District from Jan. 5, through Feb. 9, 2009.

Tutors needed to teach adults English
More than 40 adults in Cape Coral and Fort Myers want to learn English and are waiting for a tutor, according to Literacy Volunteers of Lee County (LVLC).
LVLC is a nonprofit agency with a mission of providing free and confidential adult literacy programs with the help of trained volunteers.
Volunteer tutors are required to attend a one-day training session sponsored by LVLC.
Tutors must be adults (over the age of 18) who are willing to commit a minimum of one hour of tutoring time per week for a minimum of a year. They must be high-school graduates, literate in English, and do not need to speak another language.
Upcoming tutor training sessions are scheduled for January and February 2009. All trainings are eight hours long and start at 9 a.m.

The training is free; $30 is requested to cover the cost of the materials. Scholarships are available. Volunteers will be trained to teach an adult who speaks another language how to read, write, speak and understand English. Trained tutors will be matched with a student or students who want to learn English.

Registration at Hodges University
Registration for the winter term at Hodges University has begun for currently enrolled, continuing students and for new students. The winter term begins on Jan. 20.
Hodges University expands to South Florida Community College
Hodges University will begin to offer classes on the Highland’s campus of South Florida Community College as of January, 2009. Students there will be able to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies program through an arrangement with Hodges.
Offering the IDS program at SFCC will provide greater convenience for residents there who plan to pursue degrees that are increasingly in demand by employers in today’s rapidly changing workplace. Graduates of this program will provide a readily available and highly skilled work force for employers, which will help drive the economic revitalization of the local region and the state.
