Cape Coral Yacht Club
Yacht Club Adventure camp for ages 8 through 12 is Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 29 and Dec. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The resident fee is $80 and the non-resident fee is $90. The camp will offer kayaking,tennis, fishing, swimming, beach tennis and elf training for ages 5 through 7. Pre-registration is required. For parents that need extra time around the holidays for last minute shopping, children can be dropped off at the Yacht Club, Monday Dec. 22 and Tuesday Dec. 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be crafts and activities and snacks will be provided. Cost per person per day $30 for residents and $33 for non-residents.
Youth Flag Football
Cape Coral Parks & Recreation offers Youth Flag Football (boys and girls ages 8-13) as of May 1, 2009. Registration Jan. 5 through Jan. 30, and may be done on-line at www.capecoral.net click on the Athletics home page. Additional information will be received via e-mail, or sign up at the Athletic office, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd., 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Games are played Wednesday evening and/or Saturdays at the Storm Football Complex, 2602 Chiquita Blvd.

The instructor will guide the student through airplanes and aerodynamics; airplane instruments, engines and systems airports, air traffic control and airspace and more.

Free Krav combatives lessons
Old Paths Martial Arts and Sente Fighting Systems will be offering free Krav Combatives (Israeli Combat System) classes to selected applicants commencing Jan. 1, 2009.
To qualify, applicants must be at least 15, have either trained in a verifiable contact martial art or system, with credentials to attest, or some background in wrestling or boxing.
The course will be taught by the Team Sente instructors and the staff of Old Paths Martial Arts, with the goal of developing a MMA youth and adult competition team.
A Class Act at Florida Rep
Florida Repertory Theatre’s Education Department is now enrolling for its winter class session for youth and adults, and has opportunities for children ages 4 and up, as well as adults.
The six week winter class session runs Monday evenings in Florida Rep’s studio space in the Fort Myers River District from Jan. 5, through Feb. 9, 2009.

Tutors needed to teach adults who want to learn English
More than 40 adults in Cape Coral and Fort Myers want to learn English and are waiting for a tutor, according to Literacy Volunteers of Lee County (LVLC).
LVLC is a nonprofit agency with a mission of providing free and confidential adult literacy programs with the help of trained volunteers.
Volunteer tutors are required to attend a one-day training session sponsored by LVLC.
Tutors must be adults (over the age of 18) who are willing to commit a minimum of one hour of tutoring time per week for a minimum of a year. They must be high-school graduates, literate in English, and do not need to speak another language.

The training is free; $30 is requested to cover the cost of the materials. Scholarships are available. Volunteers will be trained to teach an adult who speaks another language how to read, write, speak and understand English. Trained tutors will be matched with a student or students who want to learn English.

Registration at Hodges
Registration for the winter term at Hodges University has begun for currently enrolled, continuing students and for new students. The winter term begins on Jan. 20.
Hodges University expands to South Florida Community College
Hodges University will begin to offer classes on the Highland’s campus of South Florida Community College as of January, 2009. Students there will be able to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies program through an arrangement with Hodges.
Offering the IDS program at SFCC will provide greater convenience for residents there who plan to pursue degrees that are increasingly in demand by employers in today’s rapidly changing workplace. Graduates of this program will provide a readily available and highly skilled work force for employers, which will help drive the economic revitalization of the local region and the state.
