Young wrestlers in police athletic program compete on state and national level
The Cape Coral Police Athletic League’s Heat Wrestling Team recently competed in the 34th Annual Sea Horse Open in Coral Springs, a statewide USA Wrestling event.
Christian Jurney, a 13-year-old, eighth grader from Trafalgar Middle School, won his division in the competition and competed against previous state qualifiers and current state-ranked wrestlers in the High School Varsity Division, according to Cape Coral officer Mike Anderson.
Jurney won 4th place in the high school division.
Colten Thomas, 10, a fifth-grader from Island Park Elementary, won his division by pinning all of his opponents in the first period, Anderson said.
Thomas won third in another 9- and 10-year-old division after losing a close match to an All American and USA Florida state champion. Only two points were scored against him in a total of six matches, Anderson said.
The Heat Wrestling Team will be competing in two national level tournaments later this month, including the “Games of Rome” in Orlando, and the “Dixie Nationals” in Atlanta.
