Neighborhood Watch hot topic for Cape AARP
The local AARP Chapter has opened its fall season with Pat Foote explaining the Cape Neighborhood Watch Program.
The program has been rejuvenated through the joint efforts of the Cape police and Watch volunteers and its proving quite valuable in making the Cape safer. Foote has brought her 25 years of watch experience in New Jersey to help in building the local program.
Neighborhood Watch areas vary from a single building to several city blocks with the Cape now having 60 new Watch areas. With the city growing rapidly, the budget tight, and the stressful economic situation the police can use all the eyes and ears that volunteers can provide.
In addition to explaining the Watch program, Foot gave a number of important safety reminders such as keeping the garage door down.
This was the first of a series of AARP meetings which are open to the public to educate and inform the community and which are free.
The next meeting on Oct. 16 will be on reverse mortgages which may be beneficial to seniors but which also have lots of AARP cautions.
These meetings are held at Lake Kennedy Community Center at 1 p.m. on the third Friday of each month.
