Pop-up food drive to be held at Nevermind Awesome Bar & Eatery

By MEGHAN BRADBURY - | Jul 8, 2021

The School’s Out, Hunger’s Not campaign is having a pop-up food drive in Cape Coral at Nevermind Awesome Bar & Eatery Wednesday to help families make ends meet during the summer months.

“Every summer, Community Cooperative puts a special emphasis on food donations to support the thousands of families who find themselves struggling to make ends meet when their kids are home and unable to receive free meals from their schools,” Community Cooperative Community Relations & Development Manager Tami Holliday said. “Research shows that family grocery costs rise more than $300 a month when school is out and school meals disappear, putting a strain on already-tight budgets.”

The campaign has been taking place for 10 years.

Individuals can make a contribution to the campaign by stopping by Nevermind Awesome Bar & Eatery, 927 Cape Coral Pkwy. E., from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 14.

Holliday said the drive will collect shelf stable kid-friendly foods, such as soups, macaroni and cheese, granola bars and peanut butter and jelly. Monetary donations are also accepted.

“The event at Nevermind Awesome Eatery & Bar is an opportunity for friends to come together and fight hunger in SWFL,” she said. “Summer hunger is a real problem many families and children battle every single summer, especially after the difficult times of the pandemic.”

The items and funds collected from the pop-up drive are essential to Community Cooperative’s mission.

“Last year we received over 200,000 pounds of donated grocery items that were collected through community food drives such as this one. These items are distributed directly to our neighbors in need via our Community Market and Mobile Food Pantries. If we had to purchase these items, it would be a substantial concern for our ability to operationally continue at our current capacity,” Holliday said. “Our mission is to end hunger in SWFL, but we can’t do it alone. You can help fight hunger in our local community by holding a food drive in your neighborhood, office, or place of worship this summer. Please consider making a financial gift at any level, or volunteering for one of our many programs.”

Community Cooperative experiences a decrease in summer workforce volunteers by more than 50 percent every year.

Community Cooperative served more than 160,000 people through all of their programs in 2020.
