Lee Civic Center to host drive-thru event

Fair food will be featured Sept. 3-13

Do you have a hankering for a funnel cake or some fried Oreos? Well, you don’t have to wait until the fair comes back to town to indulge.

The Lee Civic Center will hold, for the first time, a drive-thru fair food event from Sept. 3 through Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It’s the best of both worlds, said Fran Crone, who runs the Southwest Florida Lee County Fair. You can have some great fair food while people come and bring the food to you without you having to get out of the car.

“People will drive up and place their order for certain food and get their food and drive off,” Crone said. “It’s just different kinds of food to give people a break.”

The drive-thru will be set up in the roadway leading to the civic center, with the vendors from the fair bringing in the food and setting things up, Crone said.

For those who would like to sit and eat, there will be some tables available under a tent, with social distancing.

Fair food drive-thrus have taken the country by storm, Crone said. The Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa is doing it, as is the West Palm Beach Fairgrounds, in Miami and other places.

Expect the typical fun fair food people have to state and county fairs to enjoy for years.

“There will be funnel cakes, elephant ears, corndogs and sausage dogs, as well as fried Oreos and other items,” Crone said.

There will also be cotton candy, candy apples, sno-cones, cheese steak, turkey legs, roasted corn, pizza, fries and much more

The idea is to whet the appetites of people for when the fair returns from Feb. 25 through March 7, Crone said, conditions permitting.

The Lee County Civic Center is at 11831 Bayshore Road, on the corner of State Road 31. For more information about events at the civic center, go to leeciviccenter.com.
