BJ’s Charitable Foundation ‘flash funds’ 20 classroom projects
BJ’s Charitable Foundation announced this week the flash funding of 20 classroom projects to support teachers and students in Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres.
In partnership with DonorsChoose.org – the crowd-funding charity that has brought more than $380 million to public schools since its founding by former teacher Charles Best in 2000 – BJ’s Charitable Foundation directed a majority of funding toward math and science, and literacy and language projects in high-poverty classrooms across all grade levels.
BJ’s Charitable Foundation will continue to flash fund each month in different markets throughout BJ’s 15-state footprint.
One donation specifically benefitted the Gateway Elementary School in Fort Myers for Mrs. Lee’s first grade class. BJ’s donated about $2,340 to fully fund the project with a portion used toward an interactive United States carpet and listening station and audio packets to help students with word recognition, fluency and skills.
The following information details all of the local flash funding recipients that BJ’s contributed to:
Cape Coral
n Island Coast High School received $1,584.55 to purchase supplies, from notebook paper and graph paper, to calculators and scissors for assignments and projects in Mr. Green’s Algebra I course. Since it’s a Title 1 school, additional resources are in need to help economically disadvantaged students.
n Mrs. Aguirre’s first grade class at Diplomat Elementary School in Cape Coral received $442.32 to complete its $542.32 project funding goal. The support was used for a new rug to provide a designated area where whole group learning will take place. It will also create a defined space where students can play games, read books, and engage in cooperative learning groups.
North Fort Myers
n Mrs. Curls’ biology classroom at North Fort Myers High School received $3,617.29 to provide new adjustable stools, with backrests and arm support, to create comfortable work stations for her 400 students. The students previously spent more than 80 minutes per day in the lab-style classroom sitting on uncomfortable backless round stools.
n A donation of $281.86 to complete a project goal of $306.86 was distributed to Mrs. Rodriguez’s fifth grade class at Bayshore Elementary School. The project helped to stock its library with exemplar common core chapter books, as well as a class set of, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”
