Cornwell joins Viscaya Prado

Dr. Scott Cornwell has joined the veterinarians and staff at Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital in Cape Coral
Cornwell is a Fort Myers native and graduate of the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, he brings almost 30 years of experience to our veterinary hospital team, and is a retired U.S. Army colonel. He currently holds an appointment as a courtesy associate professor at the College of Public Health, University of South Florida and is a guest professor at the University of Sarajevo Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. His specialty interest in preventive medicine and infectious diseases.
Cornwell will be available to see new clients at Viscaya Prado’s two veterinary facilities located at 920 Country Club Blvd. and the main full-service outpatient clinic at 2015 Del Prado Blvd, in Cape Coral.

Compu-Doctor
marks 15th anniversary
Cape Coral-based personal computer service firm Compu-Doctor marked its 15th anniversary April 8.
Compu-Doctor provides a wide variety of onsite and remote personal computer services to individuals and businesses in Lee County and remote services to computer users throughout the United States and Canada.
Firm founder and principal David Keller explained how Compu-Doctor made it through the recession to get to the 15-year mark.
“We are blessed with a very loyal customer base that appreciates efficient, high-quality service at reasonable rates, and we were early adopters of technology that enabled us to stay ahead of the competition.”
In 2007, faced with increasing gasoline prices and the goal to expand the firm’s service area beyond southwest Florida, Compu-Doctor began using remote access technology over the Internet to provide many of its personal computer services. Remote access enables a technician to work on a customer’s computer without having to be at its physical location.
Remote service also enabled Compu-Doctor to provide computer services for its snowbird customers when they returned to their northern homes. As a result, business increased and was much less seasonal.
During its 15-year history, Compu-Doctor has been the only computer service firm in Southwest Florida that sells no hardware or software products. In the event a customer needs a hardware component or a software product, Compu-Doctor tells the customer where to purchase it at the best possible price. If the customer wants to buy a new computer, Compu-Doctor offers a complimentary consultation, and makes recommendations free of any bias or hidden agenda.
Chamber begins search
to replace executive director
The Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Inc. has begun a search to replace Executive Director Marietta Mudgett, who retires June 30, 2011.
The Search Committee has set up a message line (239-433-8511) for interested applicants. Those calling will hear a short description of some of the qualities and skills the Executive Director position requires. Also included in the message is an email address for forwarding a resume. The cutoff for applications is May, 1, 2011.

to offer second series
of small business workshops
After a successful introduction of the Edison State College business education Workshop Series, Edison State College is now offering a second series of small business workshops. These new workshops “Understanding Small Business” and “Basic Principles of Sound Management” will each have seven 90 minute sessions, each with a different topic.
“Understanding Small Business” is the theme of the Wednesday evening workshop series starting on April 27 at 6 p.m. Each of the 7 two-hour sessions focuses on the skills needed to compete in the marketplace. The workshop series “Basic Principles of Sound Management” will take place Saturday morning, starting April 30, at 9, a convenient time for working professionals.
The cost is $20 for each 7 session workshop series and participants can attend one, some or all of the sessions in each series.

Epstein selected to federal
magistrate selection panel
Attorney Andrew S. Epstein has been appointed to serve on the merit selection panel to advise on the federal magistrate judge vacancy in the United States District Court. The purpose of the selection panel is to assist the court in selecting a new magistrate judge to fill a full-time vacancy in that position in Ocala, Fla. The panel consists of 11 members, eight of whom are lawyers. Merit selection panel members are appointed to serve by Anne C. Conway, Chief United States District Judge for the Middle District of Florida.
Epstein was previously appointed to Merit Selection Panels to consider and submit its recommendations for the reappointments of incumbent Federal Magistrate Judges Thomas G. Wilson, Mark A Pizzo, Sheri P. Chappell and Monte C. Richardson.
Epstein is a Fort Myers-based attorney with over 20 years of legal experience serving a broad range of legal issues affecting businesses and individuals. His firm serves all of Southwest Florida.

LCEC returns millions
to its customers
Nearly 5,000 LCEC equity checks are in the mail. Last month, the LCEC board of trustees approved $6.1 million in retired equity distribution to memberships that have been closed since 2003. In addition, the trustees also approved an $8.2 million general distribution to current and inactive customers which will be distributed next month.
LCEC is a not-for-profit cooperative utility. When annual excess revenues, or margins, are generated, the board of trustees considers an equity distribution. In 2010, LCEC was able to maintain a sufficient financial position and for the third year in a row did not raise base rates. Although not all cooperatives are able to return equity, LCEC has returned more than $164 million in equity over the years.
LCEC equity represents members’ investment in the LCEC electrical system in the form of substations, poles, wires, transformers and other facilities.
