FAA recognizes Southwest Florida International Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration honored Southwest Florida International Airport with the 2010 Air Carrier Airport Safety Award during the FAA’s Southern Region Communications Conference in late January. The Southern Region Airports Division recognizes excellence in airports and managers with their annual safety awards program.

The Air Carrier Airport Safety Award is given to a commercial airport that has taken actions, instituted programs or otherwise operated in a manner deserving of special recognition for improving airport safety.

Some of the 2010 initiatives to promote and improve airport safety included beginning construction of a new Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Facility; developing a Family Incident Response Support Team; enhancing the airport’s plan for long on-board delay customer care procedures; developing contingency plans in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration and airport stakeholders; giving back to the aviation community by holding safety training for aviation personnel, hosting college interns and participating in recruitment fairs; and participating in an Airport Facilities Terminal Integration Laboratory with the FAA in planning for the airport’s new parallel runway.

The FAA’s Southern Region Airports Division manages airport planning, environmental, compliance, design and safety for eight southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
