LCSO: Several ‘people of interest’ in Lani Kai shooting

By NATHAN MAYBERG - | Aug 4, 2020

There are several “people of interest” to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in connection to a the July 15 fatal shooting on Fort Myers Beach behind the Lani Kai Island Resort.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Russell Park stated that one of those individuals is in custody on unrelated charges. That person is not facing any charges related to the shooting, as of Monday morning, according to Park. The charges are of an unrelated matter, he said.

“We have several people of interest that we are looking at,” Park said. “This is a very active investigation so we really can’t release anything else.”

One person was killed and two others were wounded on the beach sand behind the resort in the shooting that took place after midnight on July 15. The victims were local friends and family of a security guard at the hotel, officials have said.

At the time of the shooting, none of the hotel’s bars or restaurants were open. The downstairs bars have been closed for weeks following the executive order issued by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The upstairs restaurants also closed early that night at 10 p.m.

The victims were described as “hanging out” in the beach area, by Sheriff Carmine Marceno during a press conference on July 15. Melissa Schneider, marketing director for the Lani Kai Island Resort, described the shooting as a “targeted incident.”
