Lee County Genealogical Society to meet Thursday

1 min read

The Lee County Genealogical Society Inc. will present “The Past is a Foreign Country – Using History to Inform Our Family Genealogies” by Dr. Paul R. Rivera at its meeting Thursday, Oct. 15, at Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 8260 Cypress Lane Drive, Fort Myers. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., with the meeting starting at 1 p.m.

When genealogists seek to discover the story of their family’s past,

they become historians. They bring to their examination of

documents, photographs, DNA evidence, and the memories of

relatives the same analytical skills employed by historians in their

search of the past. Along the way, genealogists can find their

understanding of the experiences of their ancestors enriched by the

research and findings uncovered by historians.

This presentation will draw upon the research of an historian and

genealogist into the past of his Puerto Rican-Irish family. It will

consider how to locate and use the research of historians into the

experiences of immigrants to North American from the British Isles,

Northwest Europe, Southern Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.

Specific examples of historical insights into the lives of immigrants to

North America from these areas will be explored.
