Taxiway project complete at Charlotte County Airport

2 min read

The Charlotte County Airport Authority announced that the taxiway project has been completed. The project consisted of the resurfacing of Taxiways Alpha “A” and Charlie “C.” The total cost of the project is $2.3 million and was funded with a 95 percent grant from the Federal Aviation Administration with 2.5 percent coming from the Florida Department of Transportation and 2.5 percent from the Charlotte County Airport Authority.

The lighting was relocated and the pavement was milled, resurfaced and painted with new markings.

Along with the taxiway project, in September the Charlotte County Airport completed a $2.5 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project. The project included the rehabilitation of a section of the commercial aviation ramp along with the airport’s general aviation ramp. This project replaced World War II era concrete that was in poor condition. The Charlotte County Airport Authority, which owns and operates the Charlotte County Airport, received a Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program grant in 2007 to replace a section of the commercial aviation ramp. The plans for the remaining pavement replacement were on the shelf and “shovel ready,” one of the requirements to qualify for the grant. The ARRA project was administered by the FAA.

Construction of over 5 acres of ramp rehabilitation was completed in 90 days and the taxiway project was completed in 120 days. The Charlotte County Airport is one of the first airports in the state to have completed an ARRA project in that length of time. The two projects created approximately fifty jobs from the design stage to completion.

Design/build services for both projects were handled by Hanson Professional Services and subcontracted to Hewitt Contractors. The contractor crushed and reused the old concrete from the ramp project for the needed base material on the Taxiway rehabilitation project.
