Fort Myers firefighters battle late-night blaze

On Wednesday, Aug. 26, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Fort Myers Fire Department received a call of a structure fire at 3146 St. Charles St. Firefighters arrived on scene at 10:34 p.m.

Upon arrival it was observed that the single-family residence was fully involved with fire. As firefighters made entry, the occupants stated that everyone was safely out of the home. The heaviest fire was found to be in the living room and kitchen of the residence.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a female occupant was reportedly cooking french fries for her son, but when he stated he was no longer hungry she forgot about the food on the stove. The fire is considered to be accidental.

There is heavy fire damage in a majority of the home and heavy smoke damage throughout. Red Cross was called and is assisting the family. The home is not livable.

Firefighters stayed on scene until 2:26 a.m. today monitoring flare-ups.

The Fort Myers Fire Department had four engines, one ladder truck, one rescue truck and the battalion chief on scene.
