Lee County woman convicted of trafficking heroin
Attorney General Bill McCollum today announced that a Lee County woman was convicted for trafficking heroin and conspiracy to traffic heroin. Cynthia Mitchell faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years in prison when she is sentenced at a later date. She was prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Office of Statewide Prosecution.
In March 2008, narcotics detectives with the Fort Myers Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement learned that Mitchell, 50, and co-defendant Ernest Nash were planning a trip to Miami with a confidential informant to purchase heroin. The informant, Mitchell and Nash drove to Miami, purchased heroin, and then drove back to Fort Myers where Mitchell and Nash were arrested.
Mitchell, who has previously been convicted of heroin trafficking, was convicted of trafficking in heroin, four grams or more and conspiracy to traffic in heroin, 28 grams or more. A Lee County jury returned the guilty verdict late Wednesday afternoon. In April 2009, Nash was also convicted in a separate jury trial of trafficking in heroin and conspiracy to traffic in heroin. Nash’s sentencing is set at the end of July.
