Allstate to present teen safe driving program

2 min read

Car crashes are the No. 1 killer of American teens, with nearly 5,000 teens killed and 300,000 injured annually. The primary cause of fatal teen crashes is driver error (77 percent). Teen fatality crashes are a serious problem in Florida. A recent Allstate study of the top 50 metros found three Florida cities topped the list for the rate of teen fatality crashes. Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville ranked 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Of the smaller cities, Cape Coral, ranked number 1 for the rate of teen fatality crashes.

To help save teen lives, Allstate is bringing a distracted driving course to Cape Coral for local teens to navigate. On Saturday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the German American Club on Pine Island Road, Cape Coral High School students will learn first-hand the dangers of driving distracted by attempting those behaviors on a closed, coned course taught by professional instructors.

Participants will also learn more about the Safe Teen and Novice Uniform Protection (STANDUP) Act H.R. 1895 which was introduced in Congress in April 2009. The bill creates federal graduated driver licensing (GDL) standards for young drivers. Participants can lend their support to the cause by signing a letter to the bill co-sponsors, as well as an online petition.
