‘Stamp Out Hunger’ drive May 9

2 min read

The “Stamp Out Hunger” drive is a tradition entering its 17th year and has become the largest one-day food drive in the country. This year, the food drive will be held on Saturday, May 9. The U.S. Postal Service is supporting the National Association of Letter Carriers food drive in Fort Myers and Cape Coral in cooperation with the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

Letter carriers, other postal employees and volunteers do their part on this day to provide as much food as possible. All postal customers need do is to place non-perishable food in unbreakable containers next to their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday, May 9. The carrier and/or volunteers will do all the rest. The food is taken back to a postal station, sorted, and delivered to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

Volunteers are needed to assist with the food drive. Marta Hodson, volunteer coordinator, commented, “They help the letter carriers unload their vehicles and do a pre-sort of cans and boxes. This is an ideal day for students, organizations, and companies to volunteer; students can receive volunteer credit hours. Volunteers work shifts of several hours.” Individuals interested in volunteering should contact Hodson at 239-334-7007, extension 32, or e-mail her at martahodson@harrychapinfoodbank.org.
