A Cape Coral man wanted in connection with the slaying of his girlfriend has been detained by sheriff’s deputies after a shootout at an Ohio hotel this morning.

Matthew Gullett, accused of killing Shannon Sweet in their Cape Coral apartment, was detained at a Best Value Inn at 4925 East Pike, Zanesville, Ohio, after an exchange of gunfire with police this morning, according to the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office Director of Operations Kim Hambel. The exchange left Gullett injured.

Deputies were not harmed in the incident, Hambel said.

Cape police discovered Sweet’s decaying body Monday morning at an apartment at 4921 Coronado Parkway, Unit 3. They ruled the death a

homicide and issued a warrant for Gullett’s arrest on the charge of second-degree murder.

After several days of attempting to locate Gullett, who police said was likely driving a stolen Cadillac El Dorado, Muskingum deputies spotted

the vehicle at about 11:11 a.m., Hambel said.

Deputies were still on the scene of the incident at about 1:30 p.m.

Gullett was transported to the Columbus Hospital to be treated for gunshot injuries, Hambel said.

The Breeze will release further information when it becomes available.
