2 min read

A Tampa man was killed in a traffic crash Wednesday after a rock came through his windshield and struck him in the head, causing him to lose control of his vehicle.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the traffic accident on State Road 82, in the area of Homestead Road at 8:16 a.m. Initial reports indicated that a truck, a 2002 Chevrolet, drove off the roadway, through a roadside canal, and into a wooded area.

Deputies made their way through the wooded area to the disabled vehicle. Inside the truck, deputies found the driver, identified as Wilder Bedoya, 47, unconscious. The responding deputy noticed a large cut on Bedoya’s forehead that was bleeding badly. She immediately began first-aid procedures until emergency medical personnel arrived.

Bedoya then was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Unfortunately, Bedoya died today as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident.

Bedoya’s address is listed as 7717 Bingham Court, Tampa, officials said.

The investigation reveals that a rock struck Bedoya’s windshield while he was traveling along State Road 82. The rock is believed to have broken through the windshield and struck Bedoya in the head, knocking him unconscious, and causing him to lose control of his vehicle. It is unknown where the rock came from, whether it was laying in the roadway, or if it fell from a passing vehicle. It is not believed foul play was involved in causing the accident, officials said.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is asked to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at (239) 477-1000.
