Shell Factory to host Nam Jam Sunday

By CHUCK BALLARO - | Oct 8, 2020

This Sunday, the Shell Factory & Nature Park will officially get back in the full swing of things as its event season officially kicks off while following safety guidelines.

Nam Jam, a salute to all military veterans, especially those who served during the Vietnam War, will happen Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and represents the first major event of the new season.

The Mariner High School JROTC will welcome the veterans as they arrive and vets will receive a ticket for a hot dog and chips, one well drink or two beers, free admission to the nature park, a free round of mini-golf for four and 20 percent off any store purchase. Military ID is required.

There will be a ceremony at 2 p.m., featuring a guest speaker from the Vietnam War (that person was still to be determined at press time), the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, bagpipers, The Robin Dawn Academy of Performing Arts dancers, and patriotic singing from Barb B.

There will also be Live music and entertainment, vendors and a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to a local veterans charity.

Anne Sheridan, general manager of the Shell Factory, said this event was taken place for a few years and has gained in popularity. Still, with the pandemic, precautions will be taken, especially for the Vietnam vets who are in the age range of concern of getting sick.

“It’s gotten bigger and bigger, and this time we will continue to abide by the COVID guidelines. We’re putting extra tents up so the tables are further apart. We’re open to full capacity, but we also realize people are still being cautious so we will be cautious as well,” Sheridan said. “We want people to come and feel comfortable.”

The Shell Factory is located at 16554 N. Cleveland Ave. For more information about the Nam Jam event or the Shell Factory and its activities, call 995-2141 or go to shellfactory.com.
